Q: Why do I feel light-headed after Reiki?
A: That’s called being “ungrounded.” It’s nothing to worry about, but you can take steps to feel more balanced afterward.
First, here’s why that feeling may happen. Chakras are energy centers located in various parts of your body and energy. There are seven main chakras, arranged in a line from the top of your head down to your groin. When you receive Reiki, the energy enters through your crown chakra, at the top of your head. Your third eye chakra, which is at the center of your forehead, processes intuition. That is also activated during a Reiki healing. These chakras may capture your attention as they are receiving energy, making you feel as if you are hanging upside-down with the blood rushing to your head. Essentially, the ENERGY is rushing to your head, so that’s not a bad analogy! It doesn’t mean that energy isn’t being received in other areas, but you are sensing it there with these chakras the most, since they relate to your intuitive abilities.
Now, here’s what to do if you have that spacey, dizzy feeling after receiving Reiki. Ground your energy by standing firmly, with feet spread shoulder-width apart. Visualize yourself as a tree, with roots growing down deep into the earth beneath you from the soles of your feet. Don’t worry if you can’t perfectly imagine this. Just try anyway. Let the roots extend and thicken downward through the earth, earth’s core, and beyond to the other side of the earth. Then visualize pulling earth-energy up the roots all the way back up to your feet and into your body, traveling upward through your body, down your arms to your hands, back up your arms, up your neck, and out the top of your head.
Send that energy upward as high as you can imagine, and then pull energy back down into your head and down to your heart, where it meets the earth energy coming in from below.
Observe how you feel now.
Other grounding activities you can do include drinking water (which you should do after Reiki anyway to flush out toxins), getting outside for fresh air, leaning up against a tree, sitting on a big rock, taking a bath or shower, and eating a high protein meal, or one with root vegetables.

There are other reasons which you need to make your clients aware of. If a client has been lying flat on her back receiving any form of therapy, she will have had a significant drop in blood pressure because of the relaxation experienced. If the client has low blood pressure to start with, that will result in there being insufficient blood supply to the head and the client will feel “spacey” or may even faint. This can be prevented by making sure the client gets up slowly from a lying position, sits still for a couple of minutes before attempting to stand, and drinks a cup of water before attempting to walk anywhere. Hope this helps.
Yes, Chris, that is very important and I appreciate you sharing this information with my readers! Get up slowly, drink water, and be aware of how you feel before you attempt to go on your way after a Reiki session!
