Do your hands always get hot when giving Reiki?

Q: Do your hands always get hot when giving Reiki?

A: Some Reiki practitioners’ hands get hot during a Reiki treatment. Others don’t. And sometimes one’s hands may heat up, while other times the same person’s hands might not. Hot hands are not an indication that your Reiki is stronger than my Reiki, or that Reiki is working better for one person, or on one particular day, than another. They are simply one of many indications that the energy is flowing.

Reiki practitioners sense the flow of energy in a variety of ways, called Clairs. The sensations can be visual, auditory, sentient, cognitive, or a combination of any of these. So hot hands are not the end-all-be-all of a Reiki treatment.

Personally, I have given Reiki treatments when my hands are ice cold, and so I didn’t touch the recipient. I just hovered my hands over her body while the energy was flowing. The person receiving the Reiki commented on how warm the energy felt, and she was surprised when I lightly touched her hands to show her how cold my hands were that day. Your recipient’s perceived temperature of your hands can be quite different from your actual skin temperature.

There have been other days when the skin surface of my hands seemed so hot that I thought I had to plunge them into ice water to cool them afterward.

The most important thing during a Reiki treatment is that your recipient feels better. You may also help your recipient learn to feel the energy, so you can get feedback during the healing session. Thirdly, you will start to sense all the ways the energy is communicating to you once you take note of the various sensations in your hands, and then place your attention on other means the energy uses to communicate with you. (See the link to a post about that by clicking here). The temperature of your hands is only one of many, many ways you can learn to feel and interpret energetic information.

Experience and tuned in observation will help you develop your clairs.

  1. joão says:

my hands get hot as soon as I draw the dai-ko-myo symbol.
but sometimes I feel that i don’t need to draw the symbols because my hands get hot automaticaly.
It all depends of the level of need or dispair.
I still don’t know if Reiki stops when we fall asleep,I believe that it does but I am not sure.
Still, I am starting to believe that energy has a mind of it’s own.
It starts to flow whenever we TRULY need.
I have a friend that is a medium and sometimes at night shes sends me a sms for me to help her.
but when this happens I get worried and then the amount of power that gets out of my hands it’s like a cannon ball. It’s huge power.I feel like Son-go-ku and his ka-me-a-mé (lol)

    • It’s about intention really. You are obviously sensitive to energy. If you feel overwhelmed, ask your Guides to protect you and “turn it down.” 😀
The energy doesn’t have a mind of its own as much as the recipient receives the healing he or she is ready for, where there is a need. It’s a connection between practitioner and recipient, and the intention to send plus willingness to receive that which is needed which guides the energy.
      Love and light, Alice

  2. I feel like I have been “called” to be a Reiki practictioner. Do other practioners have this experience? Thank you in advance!
