What are the Reiki Principles?

Q: What are the Reiki Principles?

A: These Reiki principles were developed by Mikao Usui, the founder of the original form of Reiki, Usui Reiki. They were adapted from “The Guidelines for a Fulfilled Life” written by the Meiji Emperor of Japan (1868-1912). They are some ethical guidelines for a Reiki practitioner, or anyone, really, in order to have a better life.

They are both simple and complex, and can be meditated on, set as goals, or simply adapted as a beautiful way of life.

The most complete and traditional translation of Usui’s original adpatation is this:

The secret method of inviting blessings
The spiritual medicine of many illnesses
For today only, do not anger, do not worry.
Be grateful. Honestly do your work. Be kind to all people.
In the morning and at night, with hands held in prayer,
think this in your mind, chant this with your mouth.
The Usui Reiki method to change your mind and body for the better.

The founder, Mikao Usui

Reiki students are taught these ideals, but they are not “commandments” since Reiki is not a religion. But if one can take them to heart, even in brief form, they can improve your life.

The briefest form is this:

Just for today:
Avoid anger
Avoid worry
Work honestly
Be grateful
Be kind.

Simple. Complex. Profound.

Hello! Where would I find state and federal guidelines for providing Reiki treatment for hospice patients in Ohio?

    • HI Cindy,

I believe that each place establishes its own practice. There are no federal guidelines. The State of Ohio has some guidelines, and I suggest joining the Yahoo Group OhioReiki where there are resources and a discussion thread on the subject. Also, contact hospices (there are several) and ask them about their specific policies and practices. xo, Alice
