Do I need to heal myself before I can heal others with Reiki?

Q: Do I need to heal myself before I can heal others with Reiki?

Self Healing by artist Kimberly Kirk

A: No. Once attuned, a person can offer healing to anyone, including him or herself, and should. Self healing is important, and can offer incredible benefits, both immediate and cumulative throughout one’s life. But Reiki energy will work, whether you are in need of healing yourself (and who isn’t?), or you are completely balanced.
Having said that, I would like to offer the idea that a person who is offering Reiki to others should always “walk their talk” – that is, this person should do regular self-healing, and also receive healing regularly from other Reiki practitioners. This is the way to be authentic, to be in integrity with one’s life and practice. If you are constantly telling others about the benefits of Reiki and you are not taking advantage of them yourself, you are out of balance between your life and practice.

When you’re a Reiki practitioner, you’ll find that other Reiki practitioners are usually willing to do a trade. I have several friends that I trade Reiki healings with on a regular basis, and we both benefit from the practice and the receiving.

Also, the more you practice Reiki for yourself, the more your intuition and your sense of self increases and develops. This is a wonderful side-effect of mindful regular Reiki practice. Most Reiki practitioners I know are very interested in developing their intuition further. Simple self healing and mindful practice are key for this.

We are all a work in progress. Let Reiki help you help yourself and others.

One Response to Do I need to heal myself before I can heal others with Reiki?

  1. I believe that self-care and working on yourself continuously is very important. That being said, I really liked this line “We are all a work in progress. Let Reiki help you help yourself and others.” Thanks for sharing.
