Q: What are the Reiki Precepts?
A: The Reiki Precepts are ideals for ethical living that were written by the founder of Usui Reiki, Mikao Usui. Usui Reiki was discovered and developed as a method of energy healing in 1922 in Japan. As a part of teaching people to work with this healing energy, Master Usui also taught these five ideals for living an ethical life. They are not commandments, as in a religion, but rather they are each worth meditating on and incorporating into one’s life. Master Usui wrote that they should be repeated each day and night, and are the secret to happiness. I agree.
Each is simple and yet complex. Ponder each one for a moment. How does it apply to your life? What would you need to do to incorporate its message into your life? How would your life change if you did? There are many ways to use the Reiki Precepts. You could focus on one each day. You could be mindful of how you worry, for example, and make effort not to, and note the difference it makes in your day. You could set your goals for the day with the precepts, and at the end of the day, recite them as a reminder. There are many ways to make them a part of your life.
Here they are:
Just for Today:
I will avoid anger.
I will avoid worry.
I will do my work honestly.
I will be grateful for my many blessings.
I will treat all living things with kindness.
