How do I choose the right Reiki teacher for me?

Q: How do I choose the right Reiki teacher for me?

A: The most important qualities in a Reiki teacher, or any teacher at all, really, are that the teacher is caring, knowledgeable, attentive, and invested in your success. Reiki is a subjective experience, so knowledge of the subject is not enough. A successful teacher will help YOU learn to feel the energy and direct it effectively through the techniques of the method of Reiki you are learning with him or her. This is different from learning algebra, for example, when the teacher mostly needs to present you with information and answer your questions, and expects you to learn the material in an objective way. A good Reiki teacher will be able to help you find and understand the unique and personal way you feel energy, and learn to work with the energy, guiding you personally to a successful experience. So first, find the best teacher who has these important qualities.

The next thing you should consider is how you prefer to learn. There are many opportunities to learn Reiki. You can learn in an intensive weekend, over a long period of weekly or bi-weekly study, by distance live, or by distance via email independently. Think of how you learn best and what situation makes you most comfortable. If you have found the teacher who fits the first criteria, any method of learning you choose will be effective for you.

Third, it is recommended that you choose a teacher who is open minded and accepting of the idea that there are many methods of energy healing, and no one way is the “right” way for everyone. You may learn one Reiki method (or energy healing method for that matter) from one person, and later as you grow, you may find yourself drawn to another Reiki method. You don’t want to feel like you’re doing the wrong thing (according to your teacher) if your intuition tells you to expand your practice to include other tools. Learn from someone who you admire personally and ethically as well as professionally.

  1. Frances says:

This is all so true. I also like to say that the saying, “when the student is ready, the teacher will appear” applies to any spiritual learning path. This has been so true in my life.

  2. Thank you, Frances! I agree, and maintain also that the reverse is true – when the teacher is ready, the student will appear. 🙂 Love and light, Alice

  3. Dia says:

& when the teacher is ready, the student(s) appear! It is such a sweet process – I love ‘opening Reiki doors’ for people! Knew at my first degree initiation that I wanted to teach as well – what blessings over the 20 years I’ve taught Reiki.

An East Coast Flower Essence practitioner friend comments that all teaching is about aligning with the teacher’s energy – whatever the subject – so look for high vibration beings you wish to align with!

  4. Dia, I couldn’t agree more! I feel so blessed to introduce people to their own inner connection to Reiki energy and all the ways that Reiki can help them improve their lives. It’s a beautiful and affirming feeling.

Yes, the right teacher is the best teacher. Obviously, you’re one of the right ones.
    Love and blessings, Alice

  5. So that is how it happened. I say that because Alice is my Reiki Teacher and one of the main reasons I choose her was her contagious enthusiasm. I too am very enthusiastic and wanted to enjoy my studies of Reiki so I guess that is why I was drawn to Alice.

If you are reading this and considering Alice as a Reiki Teacher I would suggest you listen to one or more of her radio shows. Getting to hear her voice, attitude and how she enjoys people will give you insight to her manner. Also, after hearing her voice when you read her articles you hear it in her voice, at least I do. 🙂

  6. Wow, thank you Yancey, for this most gracious and complimentary comment! You are my most enthusiastic student, and I think this shared enthusiasm and joy for energy work makes a wonderful combination! I find that the most rewarding thing about teaching Reiki and intuitive development is the positive results and enthusiastic responses of my students. The appreciation and the way that they witness their own growth – you included – are the most fulfilling parts of this for me as a teacher. Thank you for being a perfect, and public, example of this.

Readers, you can see just one example of Yancey’s enthusiasm for energy work in his Fans of Energy page.
